Denmark-based carrier Sterling Airways A/S, which is owned by Iceland's Northern Travel Holdings, is today (29 October) filing for bankruptcy.

All Sterling Airways flights have been cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Between 500 and 700 Sterling passengers are now stranded at London Gatwick Airport, according to BBC News.

Sterling's shareholder was affected by the collapse of the Icelandic financial market and the airline was unable to find alternative funding.

Customers who booked travel through the airline's website will not be refunded and will have to find alternative means of returning home. Customers who are currently abroad staying in hotels or using hired cars booked through Sterling business partners will be able to continue doing so for the total time booked.
