Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) and Northwest Airlines (NYSE:NWA) have announced that shareholders of both airlines have approved the proposed merger of the companies.

Shareholders of Delta approved the issuance of 1.25 shares of Delta common stock for each outstanding share of Northwest stock, which will be distributed upon the closure of the merger.

Around 99% of Delta stockholders approved the proposed merger, while over 98% of Northwest stockholders voted in favour of it.

An amendment to Delta's employee compensation programme was also approved by about 92% of Delta stockholders.

In April of this year Delta announced plans for a merger with Northwest in an all-stock transaction that would create a new company called Delta, headquartered in Atlanta.
