Witnessing Medical Mistakes

OB/GYN News, June 15, 2001 by Sally Peters

Most health care professionals have witnessed serious medical errors, but they witness them infrequently, according to a survey released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Of the 600 doctors interviewed for the survey 95% responded that they have seen serious medical errors take place, but only 4% reported witnessing these events frequently Results were similar for the 200 administrators and 200 registered nurses who were also surveyed.

Provider organizations such as hospitals, health maintenance organizations, and physician groups should take primary responsibility for solutions, say the majority of those surveyed.
