Stem cell poll

OB/GYN News, Nov 15, 2004 by Mary Ellen Schneider

More than half of Americans now strongly or somewhat strongly favor embryonic stem cell research, according to the results of a national survey conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). The percentage of people who favor stem cell research--53%--is up, from 47% in last year's VCU Life Sciences Survey.

And the number of people who strongly or somewhat oppose stem cell research declined--to 36%, from 44% in 2003. The survey also showed that most Americans are opposed to human cloning; about 83% of those surveyed responded that way. In cases where cloning is limited to research for disease treatment, 56% opposed it, and 42% favored it. VCU's Center for Public Policy surveyed 1,004 adults nationwide by telephone during September.
