Diesel-breath sarcasm prompts libel suit by indonesian president
Diesel Fuel News, June 9, 2003
According to a Jakarta Post report, the editor of a local daily, Rakyat Merdeka, is on trial for publishing a series of articles ridiculing President Megawati Soekarnoputri. One article, titled "Mulut Mega Bau Solar" ("Mega's mouth smells of diesel") featured a picture of a fat woman drinking diesel fuel, the Post reported.
Such sarcasm against politicians isn't well-tolerated in Indonesia, unlike the press freedom enjoyed in much of our world. Megawati's lawyer said the editor "has never smelt Megawati's mouth" hence this diesel-breath claim is supposedly defamatory.
