India's Petroleum Ministry favors higher tax on kero to stifle diesel, petrol adulteration
Diesel Fuel News, July 21, 2003
According to a report from BusinessLine (India), the Petroleum Ministry urges a higher duty on kerosene, the "poor man's cooking fuel," in order to prevent diversion and adulteration of diesel fuel. Such adulteration is cited as a key reason favoring compressed natural gas (CNG) mandates rather than ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) with diesel particulate filters.
Currently, kerosene has a 16% tax rate versus 21.4% for diesel, enough to explain a doubling of kero imports this year versus last, the report said.
