Metro Los Angeles cleans up 400 diesel school buses with diesel particulate filters for tiny fraction of CNG bus cost
Diesel Fuel News, August 5, 2002
South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) will spend just $3 million to retrofit 400 diesel school buses with DPFs, but shell out a whopping $7.9 million on a mere 60 CNG buses, as part of its "diesel soot reduction projects" announced last month. That's over $130,000 per "clean" CNG bus versus just $7,500 per "clean" diesel bus, or 17 times as much spent per-bus on CNG, not including the huge extra cost of CNG refueling infrastructure.
