Alaska Governor fighting EPA's SCR mandate for diesel gen-set at zinc mine
Diesel Fuel News, August 19, 2002
Having lost its case before U.S. Appeals Court, Alaska will seek review by U.S. Supreme Court over a U.S. EPA order requiring selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on a diesel generator set at the giant Teck Cominco zinc mine. Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles last week said that the mine had earlier already agreed to install less-costly emissions controls on all its diesel gen-set engines, such that the net nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions would be less than the NOx emissions from the single EPA-mandated SCR system on a new engine.
Alaska says the SCR system will cost $10 million to build and add up to $1.5 million/year in operating costs at the mine.
