Diesel-powered ferry emissions test success despite contamination of ULSD

Diesel Fuel News, Sept 15, 2003

Diesel-Powered Ferry Emissions Test Success Despite Contamination of ULSD: During tests, high-sulfur marine diesel fuel contaminated ultra-low sulfur diesel onboard an "SCX Wave Rider" ferry operating between San Diego and Oceanside, Ca. The ferry has four 1981 DDC 12V92 two-stroke engines, with two fuel tanks that might have allowed cross-contamination.

Even with the fuel contamination, particulate matter (PM) emissions declined 42% compared to running on pure 3,000-ppm sulfur marine diesel, the West Virginia University (WVU) emissions research team found in special tests. Adding a water injection system cut nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 16.5%, they found.
