French study shows cost, emissions comparison between CNG, clean-diesel

Diesel Fuel News, Sept 15, 2003

French Study Shows Cost, Emissions Comparison Between CNG, Clean-Diesel: A French CNG bus costs about (Euro)$30,000 more than a conventional diesel bus, while adding a DPF to a diesel costs (Euro) $4,500-6,000 more than a conventional diesel, according to a study for the French environmental agency (ADEME).

Fuel penalty with CNG is about 34% greater than diesel, plus another (Euro)$500,000 for a CNG compressor, while ULSD price increment is about (Euro)3-cents/liter higher than conventional diesel. CNG has additional costs for security, higher operations cost and special maintenance facilities, while clean-diesel has incremental cost for DPF cleaning about every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers. CNG is lower in NOx but worse on "global warming" methane emissions, ADEME's study consultant Thierry Seguelong (Aaqius&Aaqius) showed here.
