'E-Diesel' test confirms Fuel Economy Penalties, engineers to study fuel system wear
Diesel Fuel News, Jan 7, 2002
Illinois Dept. of Commerce last month confirmed what ethanol giant ADM told us earlier: Blends of 10% or 15% ethanol in diesel carry hefty fuel economy penalties of 7-10% in heavy-duty highway trucks. As for possible wear issues, "engineers will examine key engine parts for wear, including the fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel injectors" on the 1999 Mack E-7 diesel engines used in the ADM test trucks, the Department (co-sponsor of the tests) said.
Bosch earlier raised red flags about "e-diesel" causing unacceptable damage to fuel injectors and pumps (see Diesel Fuel News 11/12/2001, p9).
