U.S. EPA announces diesel school bus retrofit grants

EPA's new list (see: www.epa.gov/otaq/schoolbus/grants 2003.htm# list1) includes $5 million for 17 school districts and about 4,000 buses. Phoenix will retrofit 114 buses with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and ULSD fuel; Fresno will retrofit 53 buses with oxidation catalysts and diesel-water emulsion fuel; Denver will put oxi-cats on 160 buses and evaluate biodiesel fuel; Chicago will put oxi-cats on 14 buses; Maine will do 266 oxi-cat retrofits and buy 180 new buses; Boston will install 65 DPFs and convert to ULSD; Mississippi will put oxi-cats on 47 buses; Coming (NY) will put DPFs and ULSD on 17 buses; Asheville (NC) will put oxi-cats on 321 buses; Cleveland will put DPFs and ULSD on 36 buses; Dayton (Ohio) will put oxi-cats on 33 buses; Pittsburgh will put oxi-cats on 84 buses and work to bring ULSD fuel; Texas will put DPFs on 73 buses and fuel entire fleets in Dallas, Ft.

Worth, Austin and Houston with ULSD; Salt Lake City will buy 10 CNG buses; Washington will retrofit 139 rural buses with oxi-cats and 21 with DPFs/ULSD; and National School Transportation Association will establish a "subgrant" program for retrofits/ULSD for contract bus providers.
