Lubricant nano-particles issue isn't yet on 'PC-10' 2007 lubes radar screen

Diesel Fuel News, Nov 11, 2002

Despite a rather alarming lubes/nano-PM link made by engine combustion particle scientist David Kittelson (U-Minnesota) at Diesel Engine Emissions Reduction (DEER) conference earlier this year (see Diesel Fuel News 9/2/02, p5), the "PC-10 New Category Evaluation Team" (NCET) for North American 2007 lubricant standards hasn't been asked to probe formulations designed to limit nano-PM emissions.

While U.S. EPA "has participated in NCET meetings, they have not indicated any interest in regulating nano-particulates or oil properties," explains NCET chair Bill Runkle of Ashland/Valvoline. Meantime, the joint industry/government "advanced petroleum-based fuels/diesel emissions control" (APBF-DEC) project investigating lubes impact on emissions and exhaust aftertreatment (see Diesel Fuel News 9/16/02, p12) isn't focused on the nanoPM/lubes formulation link, either. "However, it is something to keep in mind as we start thinking about the sec ond phase of DEC," says National Renewable Energy Lab's Shawn Whitacre, who's working on the APBF-DEC project.
