ASTM diesel fuel thermal stability standard making progress

Diesel Fuel News, Dec 23, 2002

American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) "E-2" diesel fuels section resolved key "negative" votes on a thermal stability standard at its meeting in Los Angeles this month, but finalizing the standard still will require another ballot. A key "negative" found "persuasive" at ASTM focused on language describing an "80% reflectance" result on a standard ASTM thermal stability test as providing "excellent" performance.

New language will replace that with other, more precise ASTM diesel fuel language in the next ballot. Meantime, Octel diesel fuel stability expert Cy Henry also pointed out at ASTM meeting that some ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) potentially could suffer peroxide formation, leading to attack on fuel system seals. But a fairly simple test (D6447) can detect such peroxide tendencies, and a hindered phenol antioxidant additive is available today to fix any problem, he pointed out.
