Iran to crack down on smoky diesels
Diesel Fuel News, Jan 21, 2002
According to a report from Iran news agency (INRA), Iran would deny license plate issuance to diesel cars starting in March, in order to promote the use of natural gas or LP-Gas and cut pollution in Tehran. Iran also wants to encourage the use of gas in place of gasoline and diesel, in part to exploit the country's gigantic reserves of natural gas and gas liquids.
According to the report, Iran could export gasoline and diesel, rather than subsidizing the price of domestic fuels as per current policy. Iran has to import gasoline because of its cheap, government-subsidized price, but the current plan is to eliminate such subsidies by 2005. Iran is also considering gas-to-liquids (GTL) diesel plant projects, due to its huge stranded gas reserves.
