Malaysia aims to boost CNG stations by 2005

Diesel Fuel News, Feb 4, 2002

The Ministry of Science, Technology & Environment announced last month that it will work with Malaysian state oil company Petronas to promote more CNG vehicles and CNG refueling stations. Reason: To cut pollution and boost use of large domestic gas reserves, according to a report from The Star (Kuala Lumpur).

Taxi-cabs are the primary CNG vehicle conversion, with about 4,000 vehicles. Now, Petronas is proposing to build 160 CNG refueling stations to help cars, trucks and buses make switch, the report said. Ironically, Malaysia is trying to promote palm-oil based biodiesel at the same time, but the CNG conversions will slash the market for such fuel.
