California newspaper slams 'dirty' Mexican diesel trucks, supports teamsters lawsuit
Diesel Fuel News, Feb 17, 2003
Oakland Tribune praised a 9th U.S. Appeals Court ruling blocking entry of Mexican diesel trucks to the U.S. unless they meet the same safety and environmental standards of U.S. trucks. U.S. President Bush favored easing Mexican truck entry as required by North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
But California truckers, Teamsters and some "greens" don't want low-cost "dirty" competition. "We should help Mexico raise its standards -- and lower its pollution -- by requiring [their] trucks to comply with [U.S.] emission requirements, which are to become even stricter in 2004 and 2007," the Tribune said.
