School bus pollution studies rap diesel, push changes

* Selective Free Ride

While all the diesel buses are claimed to be a health threat, and CNG gets an automatic free pass, UCS made no attempt to take emissions measurements on those buses, a daunting task. "You can't draw conclusions without a valid study," NASDPTS association executive director Charles Gauthier told us.

Meantime, local school districts also seem to find the wisdom of buying far lower-cost clean-diesel technology rather more compelling than very expensive CNG, as Fairfield-Suisun (Calif.) school district just concluded.

This district just bought five new green-diesel, DPF-equipped buses, and is retrofitting 15 others with PM filters and ULSD. The district made the decision after mulling the millions of dollars of extra costs for CNG refueling stations and high-cost buses, according to a report from the Fairfield Daily Republic.
