Ethanol, methanol, propylene glycol not feasible for urea freeze-point depressants

Diesel Fuel News, March 17, 2003

While urea-SCR might take off in European heavy-duty, employing mechanical means to prevent urea freezing (urea freezes at -11 [degrees]C/1 2[degrees]F), chemical freeze-point depressants aren't practical for light-duty, Ford reported in a paper (SAE 2003-01-0 775) here. SCR systems lack the right catalysts to reduce glycol or organic additive HC emissions; a precious-metal cat would need to be added, raising the cost of such a system, they found.
