New York metro transit authority study confirms clean-diesel can beat CNG on Toxics

Diesel Fuel News, March 17, 2003

Yet another research paper (SAE 2003-01-0300) shows that filter-equipped diesel transit buses can beat CNG on "toxic" emissions. This study (first reported by Diesel Fuel News 9/11/00, p12) by New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Environment Canada and MTA compares 1999 DDC transit buses designed for CNG and clean-diesel (with particle filters and ULSD).

The study shows toxic carbonyl emissions from CNG were about 10 times higher than clean-diesel, while CNG had "slightly lower" NOx emissions except for one CNG bus with much higher NOx emissions. Both types of buses were similar on particulate matter (PM) emissions and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions. CNG buses had higher PM emissions during backfiring on certain portions of the test cycle. Backfiring could damage or destroy oxidation catalysts recently proposed as the "remedy" to reduce the toxics of CNG emissions.
