U.S. EPA grants ULSD 'hardship' relief to giant

Diesel Fuel News, March 17, 2003 by Jeremy Glunt

U.S. EPA has approved a "hardship relief compliance plan" for Giant Industries' Yorktown, Va., refinery, which will give the company about 18 months extra to comply with the mid-2006 15-ppm sulfur limit for ultra-lowsulfur diesel (ULSD), an EPA source confirmed to us.

"This waiver postpones in excess of $25 million of capital expenditures," Giant said in an earnings announcement. "Giant must be in full compliance with the sulfur standards at our Yorktown refinery by Jan. 1, 2008."

Last June, Giant asked EPA for small refiner "hardship" relief from EPA's 2006 deadline to produce ULSD.
