BP aims high on clean fuels

Diesel Fuel News, March 18, 2002

"Within the next three years 50% of our pump sales worldwide will be clean fuels, including zero-sulfur [<15 ppm] fuels, which we hope will help to catalyze the development of more efficient engines," says BP's CEO, John Browne. It's part of BP's new global plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions and cut pollution world-wide.

Low-carbon fuels will grab a share, as for example the substitution of natural gas power-generation for higher-carbon fuels "in emerging economies such as China," Browne said. Also on tap: More solar energy (BP sales target: up 40% this year), more cogeneration, and more energy-efficient lube oils, which could slash [CO.sub.2] emissions by 30 million tons/year in Europe alone, he said.
