Detroit news endorses clean-diesel as alternative to CAFE mandates
Diesel Fuel News, March 18, 2002
Citing a recent speech by Michigan Gov. John Engler (R), the Detroit News (home-town voice of a big part of the world's auto industry) endorsed shifting federal R&D funds from high-cost fuel cells to low-cost clean-diesel research. "Diesel is the simplest way to accomplish dramatic gains in fuel efficiency without changing the way America makes or markets vehicles and without requiring a new fuel distribution system," the News editorial said.
Today's diesel cars get 45-60% better fuel economy than gasoline cars of the same size, but don't meet EPA Tier 2 limits.
