Microsoft Corp has previewed its next-generation Windows CE-based Palm-size PC software and given a new name - Pocket PC - to personal digital assistant devices that use the operating system.

The Pocket PC software will ship with two new applications - Microsoft Reader with ClearType display technology and the Microsoft Windows Media Player.

Microsoft Reader is electronic book software that is designed to provide users with an on-screen computer "reading experience" similar in convenience and quality to reading text printed on paper, while the Windows Media Player will enable consumers to access music in Windows Media and MP3 formats.

According to Microsoft, several hardware vendors, including Casio Computer Co Ltd, Compaq Computer Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co and Symbol Technologies Inc, plan to support the Pocket PC software in upcoming products that are expected to be available in 1H'2000.
