US company Molex Inc has launched its Secure Data Access Module, a PC card with an associated smart card reader.

The card, which has the type II form factor and fits in a PC card slot without protruding, can be used as a passive adapter enabling a PCMCIA slot to read a smart card.

According to Molex possible uses of the Secure Data Access Module include pay-TV applications to discramble MPEG2 data streams in set-top boxes and to provide secure transactions via Internet with a notebook and also with a set-top box, with the card handling both the encryption/decryption and the digital signature.

Availability and pricing were not revealed.
