Intel Corp has launched two new networking devices designed to provide wireless access to the Internet and to company networks using radio frequencies instead of wires and cables.

The new devices - Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 LAN PC Card and Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 LAN Access Point - are the first products Intel has developed together with Symbol Technologies Inc.

The PC Card device, which is about the size of a credit card, is inserted into a laptop to allow wireless transmissions to be sent and received. Features include roaming capabilities that enable users to move freely in a building without losing the network connection, data transfer at speeds of up to 11Mb/s and intelligent power management.

The Access Point devices are mounted on ceilings, walls or shelves and function as a hub communicating with mobile cards and serving as a connection between existing wired network and the wireless device.

Both the PC Card and the Access Point will be available on 7 August, priced at USD199 and USD999 respectively.

In related news Intel has decided that the headquarters of its Wireless LAN Operation will be in San Diego, California.
