Apple Computer has unveiled the public beta version of its new operating system, Mac OS X (pronounced MAC OS ten).

Mac OS X Public Beta is designed to be more reliable and easier to use than its predecessors. The new Apple Quartz 2D graphics engine, OpenGL and a new version of QuickTime are included to give the system higher quality graphics, gaming and streaming audio and video. The Mac OS X Public Beta also includes a beta version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, together with Apple's new IMAP and POP compatible mail client and a new version of the Sherlock Internet searching tool.

Mac OS X Public Beta is available now in English, French and German priced at USD29.95. The final version of the software, Mac OS X version 1.0, is expected to be available early next year.

In related news, Apple has introduced a new line of its iBook laptop computers.

Featuring FireWire ports and the digital video editing software iMovie 2, the iBook is now available in Indigo and Key Lime, priced at USD1,499, while the iBook Special Edition - which includes a DVD-ROM drive - comes in Graphite and Key Lime and is priced at USD1,799. Both models are available immediately.

The new models include a 366MHz or 466MHz PowerPC G3 processor; a 10Gb IDE hard drive, configurable to 20Gb; an AV port providing audio and composite video output and the ATI RAGE Mobility 128 controller with 8Mb of SDRAM.

The new Key Lime colour is available exclusively from Apple's Online Store at http://www.apple.com.
