Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has unveiled what it claims to be the world's smallest 512Mb NAND-type flash memory chip.

Developed using 0.15-micron design rule, the new chip is, according to Samsung, also the industry's highest capacity monolithic die - when two 512Mb flash memory dies are stacked as a dual-die device the chip can provide memory capacity of up to 1Gb.

Samsung plans to target the new chip at makers of digital cameras, MP3 players, digital TVs and 3G mobile phones. The chip can also be used with portable products such as personal digital assistants and Palm PCs as a high-density storage device in place of a hard disk drive.

Samples of the 512Mb flash memory device are available, with full-scale production scheduled to begin in 3Q'2001. Pricing was not revealed. Samsung expects sales to reach USD800m this year.
