The US chip maker Intel Corp has unveiled its first mobile Pentium III processor to operate at a speed of 1GHz.

Designed for full size and thin-and-light notebooks, the 1GHz microprocessor chip is, according to Intel, the world's fastest mobile PC processor.

The chip uses Intel's SpeedStep technology to dynamically switch clock frequency and voltage - providing 1GHz performance at 1.7 volts when power saving is not an issue and slowing down the processor to run at 700MHz and 1.35 volts when the user wants to conserve power.

Other features include a 100MHz system bus, 256Kb full-speed Advanced Transfer Cache and Streaming SIMD extensions for higher system performance.

Intel has also introduced a 900MHz mobile Pentium III processor with SpeedStep technology and a 750MHz mobile Intel Celeron processor. In 1,000-unit quantities, the mobile 1GHz Pentium III processor will be priced at USD722 while the 900MHz version and the 750MHz mobile Celeron processor will cost USD562 and USD170 respectively.
