The German company Utimaco Safeware AG has unveiled a hardware and software security system called SafeGuard Biometrics.

The new system, which consists of a smartcard/fingerprint reader with an integrated fingerprint sensor and a special smartcard capable of storing biometric data, allows users to unlock their smartcards using their fingerprint rather than having to enter a PIN or password for authentication. Targeted at financial institutions and internal IT security applications in companies, the system can also be used in such company applications as digital signature, encryption and single sign-on.

Utimaco developed SafeGuard Biometrics through its partnership with the Swedish smart card/fingerprint reader manufacturer Precise Biometrics AB and the Finnish smart card operating systems supplier Miotec Oy.

The module is available immediately with pricing beginning at GBP150/user.
