IBM is to launch a new version of the ThinkPad X30 notebook, with WiFi wireless networking and extended battery life.

The X30 - weighing 3.6 pounds - has Bluetooth capabilities, a FireWire port, a security chip for better encryption and authentication and software for changing networks.

A portable docking bay which plugs into the back of the X30 also provides an extra optical drive and battery, power management software also helps extend the battery life to eight hours.

IBM predicts that in the next year up to 50% of notebooks will have wireless capabilities, the figure rising to over 70% in two years. Researchers from IDC also predict that notebook sales will increase by 16.3% next year.

The price of the new ThinkPad X30 was not revealed.
