IBM has announced that it has developed a new device that can store up to one trillion bits of information on one chip.

The storage device features 1,000 heated spikes which can make and read indentations in a polymer film. According to the company, the chip is roughly the size of an average postage stamp.

The development work was carried out as part of IBM's Millipede research into nanotechnology devices.
