IBM has revealed its latest UNIX server offering aimed at the high performance computing market.

The eServer p655 is available in four or eight processor units and can be configured to use up to 128 POWER4 processors in a single rack. The company expects the new server offering to be used in scientific and technical computing environments such as life sciences, automobile design and financial market analysis.

IBM claims that the eServer 655 is the next generation of the IBM supercomputer which was used to beat chess champion Garry Kasparov.

The eServer p655 is expected to ship at some point in 2002 for the starting price of GBP57,359.
