Technology companies Toshiba and NEC have joined forces to develop a next-generation memory chip for laptop computers and mobile phones.

Both companies are aiming to develop an energy-efficient magnetic memory system called Magnetic Random Access Memory. This, according to the companies, is expected to store more information, provide faster access times and use less power than existing memory systems.

The aim of the venture is to produce a 256Mb chip by 2005.

A total of USD53m will be invested in the project by the two companies.
