Worldwide Computer Products News-5 September 2002-Microsoft launches Windows Media 9 (C)1995-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Microsoft has launched its new media player, Windows Media 9, saying that the improvements will make it almost like watching television.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said that they had been working on the platform for three years and spent a USD0.25bn on developing just one piece of software - the digital locks to stop unauthorised people from copying and distributing their work.

Microsoft media player rival RealNetworks has said that they introduced some of the same improvements on their last media player.

Intertainer Inc is already offering eight film titles on Windows Media 9 after testing it for six weeks, and has said that the new software offers between 20% and 30% better picture and sound quality.

Microsoft said that the new media player limits delays when running audio or video - a process called buffering - and offers surround sound and better picture quality.

No pricing details were released.
