Tape storage solutions supplier StorageTek has announced HP's LTO Ultrium Generation 2 tape drive for StorageTek L180 and L700 tape libraries.

The LTO-2 drive offers 400GB capacity per cartridge and a transfer speed of up to 70MB/s compressed. LTO-2 tape drives are also read and write compatible with earlier LTO Ultrium tape drives which, according to the company, will enable companies to migrate to a newer tape drive while protecting their investments in earlier LTO technology.

A spokesperson for the company said that StorageTek is aiming to provide a range of tape drive alternatives for the L180 and L700 tape libraries in a bid to provide tailored solutions to its customers.

The HP LTO-2 drive for the StorageTek L180 and L700 libraries is priced at USD13,750.
