According to industry analyst group Gartner Inc, worldwide personal digital assistant (PDA) shipments exceeded 2.8m units, as Microsoft Windows CE operating system licensees surpassed the Palm OS for the first time in the Q3 2004.

According to the report, the Microsoft Windows CE operating system accounted for 48.1% of worldwide PDA shipments in Q3 2004. Palm OS units represented 29.8% of the market, down from 46.9% market share in Q3 2003. The market share of Research In Motion grew from 4.9% in Q3 2003 to 19.8% in Q3 2004.

PalmOne continued to lead the worldwide market in PDA hardware shipments, but its shipments declined 13.3% in Q3 2004. PalmOne's market share totaled 26.2%, with Hewlett-Packard's market share increasing to 24.2% and Research in Motion to 19.8%.

Worldwide PDA shipments are expected to total 11.9m units in 2004, up approximately 4% from 2003.
