Desktop search software from Internet search engine Google is reportedly being updated to enable the tool to provide a digital helper service.
The tool is said to watch as users work and react to their actions, and it is reported that the update will result in increased competition between Google and AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo. It is said to be more active than the original version, displaying relevant images, web links and personal documents in an on-screen panel. In addition it is understood to automatically sign the user up to RSS feeds on their favourite websites and monitor various e-mail accounts, alerting the user to new messages.

The software also enables a list of most-used documents and files to be kept, to be launched by the user when needed. Such features are said to have been present in Blinkx, Apple and Yahoo programs for some time and the option to access new e-mails and frequently used files is said to compete with the Windows operating system.
Google's desktop search software is compatible with Windows XP and 2000 and the new beta version is available for download now.
