IT technology company Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) announced on Wednesday (24 August) the availability of its advanced voice-over-cable (VoCable) chipset and new Wideband DOCSIS reference design.
According to the company, TI's DSP-based TNETC47xx (Puma-4) VoCable chipset incorporates advancements to process cellular codecs, in preparation for fixed mobile convergence with phones that operate on cellular or VoIP connections. In addition, its low bit-rate codecs for conferencing channels use half the bandwidth currently consumed for multi-user calls, the company claims. The TNETC47xx also has advanced fax capabilities.

According to broadband research firm Kinetic Strategies, of the 2.5m embedded multimedia terminal adapters (EMTAs) shipped worldwide during the first half of 2005, 1.7m units, that is 66.5% used TI VoCable chips.
In addition, TI announced it has developed a Wideband DOCSIS reference design that lets equipment manufacturers and service providers evaluate system architectures today, speeding time to market, which will reportedly allow multi-service operators to quickly offer advanced features and enhanced cable modems, once the standard is approved. TI's TNETC47xx chipset will sample in the fourth quarter of 2005, the company claims. No pricing details were disclosed.
