Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, an Asian technology company, has announced that it is developing new RAM memory chips and thinner liquid crystal display (LCD) screens.

Samsung is planning the development of magnetic RAM chips, said to provide quicker computing speeds and keep their stored data once the power has been turned off. Ferroelectric RAM chips are also thought be planned by Samsung, requiring less power and offering faster data processing speeds than flash memory. It is expected that the magnetic and ferroelectric chips will be used for various devices from high-end mobile phones to smart cards.

In addition to the chips, Samsung is also expected to work on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology, which offers a more versatile, paper-thin display requiring less power. It is thought that production of OLEDs could cost 20-50% less than the manufacture of LCDs.
