Worldwide Computer Products News-20 December 2005-Microsoft announces end of IE for Macs(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Software company Microsoft has revealed that it is to end Internet Explorer (IE) for Apple Mac computers and advised users to move to competitor browsers such as Safari from Apple.

Microsoft confirmed that it will not provide any more security updates for IE for Macs as of 2006, having previously announced that it had stopped working on the browser in June this year. It intends to remove the browser from its Mactopia website from 31 January 2006 and said it will no longer be available for download.

Microsoft has issued a recommendation on its website that Mac users move to more up to date web browsers such as Safari, while Firefox and Opera are other alternatives. Microsoft's current IE for Macs is three years old, making it somewhat out of date in comparison to the equivalent browser for Windows.

Mac users may face problems with websites that have been designed exclusively for IE - SciVisum, a web-testing company, looked at 100 UK websites in June and found that 10% would not function properly on the Firefox browser.
