Software manufacturer Microsoft Corp has announced that it has selected the name 'Windows Vista' for the new version of its operating system.

The new operating system, which was previously referred to by its codename, Longhorn, has been scheduled to launch in the second half of 2006, reported Reuters. According to the company, Windows Vista will offer a variety of new features including enhanced security, graphics and computing over the web.

Microsoft has said that further details on Windows Vista are to be made available at a developer's conference in September, with a first beta, or test version, being released by 3 August 2005.
