Two new identity management products, Sun Java System Federation Manager and Identity Manager Service Provider Edition, have been introduced by Sun Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq:SUNW).

According to Sun these products allow customers to extend identity management to multiple partners, users, devices and applications. The company believes the new products will enable the next phase of identity management, moving from the Internet age to the extranet age.

Federation Manager is described as a solution to help companies enable alliances across many partner sites with speed and efficiency. Standards-based authentication information can be exchanged and identities automatically linked across multiple sites. The program adheres to accepted protocols such as Security Assertions Markup Language (SAML), Liberty Identity Federation Framework (ID-FF) and Liberty Identity Web Services Framework (ID-WSF).

Identity Manager Service Provider Edition is said to be an identity administration solution to help enable federated provisioning across trusted partner networks. Identity services for registration, self-administration, delegated administration and synchronization are provided. It is based on open standards such as the Service Provisioning Markup Language (SPML) and provides reusable identity administration capabilities.
