Enterprise software company Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq: SUNW), a technology developer, announced on Tuesday (15 November) that Oracle has chosen the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) as its preferred development and deployment platform for most x64 architectures of AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon processor-based systems and Sun's UltraSPARC-based systems.

Sun's Solaris 10 OS will be used throughout Oracle's development organisation and will provide full access to source code and support for more than 440 x86/x64 systems, as well as access to key features including performance enhancements.

Oracle said it plans to release and ship 64-bit versions of all its products on the Solaris OS prior to or simultaneous with the release of its products on other operating systems.
