Worldwide Computer Products News-18 October 2005-New Skype spoof IRCbot trojan detected by MessageLabs(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Messaging security and management services to businesses provider MessageLabs revealed on Monday (17 October) that it has detected and blocked more than 800 copies of a new variant of the IRCbot (aka Fanbot) trojan.

The new trojan is being distributed via e-mail disguised as the newest release of the Skype VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) software client, version 1.4, which was first released on 10 October.

The fake e-mails, the first to target Skype users with e-mails that appear to originate directly from Skype, encourage recipients to open a fake attachment to view further details of the Skype offering.

According to MessageLabs, when executed, the attached malware program displays a fake "installation error" box whilst it is installing itself as %sysdir%\remote.exe, altering the registry and shutting down shared access and Windows update services.

Over 150 e-mails of this type have been detected by the company since 16 October, MessageLabs revealed.
