Worldwide Computer Products News-3 October 2005-Microsoft to enable save to PDF feature in Office 12(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The ability to save documents in the Portable Document Format (PDF) developed by Adobe Systems Inc will be included in the next version of Microsoft Office, code-named Office 12.

Saving documents as PDFs using Adobe's Acrobat Reader software is a popular way of enabling documents to be filed and shared between different software programs and computers. The "save as PDF" feature has been developed in Office 12 using Adobe's open PDF standard which enables PDFs to be created by other software developers without the need to pay a licensing fee. Microsoft said over 120,000 users per month have requested the ability to save Office documents as PDFs and Office programs such as Access, Excel, Power Point and Word will include the option to save as PDFs.

The release of Office 12 is anticipated in the second half of next year and an upgrade of Microsoft's Windows program is expected within the same time period. The inclusion of PDF in Office 12 is expected to help increase the popularity of the new program as Microsoft seeks to convince users of the value of adopting the new versions of both programs.
