Worldwide Computer Products News-28 September 2005-Apple reports problem with iPod Nano batch(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Following a number of complaints about screen damage to the iPod Nano, electronics manufacturer Apple has reported a manufacturing problem relating to a quality issue in one batch and has offered replacements.

Apple said the problem has left the screens of the batch of its new music player susceptible to cracking and claimed the problem affects less than 0.1% of Nanos shipped to date. Some Nano owners have reported cracked and scratched screens within hours of purchasing the music player and some have informed Apple of screen failures.

A website launched by one Nano owner to log complaints and encourage Apple to deal with the problem received up to 30 e-mails an hour from other Nano owners. The website has now been closed by its owner following Apple's acknowledgement, although the company denied reports that the Nano is more likely to scratch than other iPods.

Apple suggested that customers worried about screen scratching should consider using an iPod Nano case and confirmed that the Nano is made from the same polycarbonate plastic as the fourth generation iPod.

A temporary price increase on the iPod Nano screen replacement service has been announced by iPod ResQ, an iPod repair company, due to high demand for the service.
