Desktop personal computers incorporating Blu-ray disk drives are to be introduced in June 2006 in Japan by computer company Fujitsu Ltd, making it the first company to offer PCs which are compatible with the next-generation optical disks.

According to Fujitsu, the new desktop PCs will feature a 37" LCD screen and will sell for about JPY600,000. The company also intends to introduce notebook PCs featuring HD DVD drives, in June, to be available for around JPY400,000.

Blue lasers are at the core of both DVD formats, providing a shorter wavelength than the red lasers currently used in DVD equipment and enabling data to be stored at the higher densities required for high-definition TV and movies.

Toshiba Corp has also revealed recently that it intends to introduce notebook computers in May able to handle HD DVD disks, which compete with Blu-ray disks in the high-definition optical disk market. The forthcoming Fujitsu notebooks are expected to be priced in line with the new notebooks from Toshiba.

NEC Corp, a Japanese electronics manufacturer, has also confirmed its plans to introduce HD DVD-compatible PCs by autumn 2006 and said it may consider introducing Blu-ray drive-equipped PCs, depending on demand.
