The new 17" MacBook Pro notebook computer with 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processor, has been unveiled by computer company Apple, reportedly providing up to five times the performance of the company's PowerBook G4.

The notebook offers a 1680 x 1050 LCD display, 1GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB Serial ATA 5400 rpm HDD, sudden motion sensor and PCI Express-based ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory. It also features an 8x SuperDrive with double layer support, DVI-out port, Dual Link support for Apple's 30" Cinema HD Display, built-in iSight video camera, gigabit Ethernet port and ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot.

In addition the 17" MacBook Pro provides AirPort Extreme wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, FireWire 400 port, one audio line in and one audio line out port. It also includes iLife '06, Mac OS X version 10.4.6 Tiger, a scrolling trackpad, illuminated keyboard, infra-red Apple Remote, 68 watt hour lithium polymer battery and 85 watt Apple MagSafe Power Adapter.

The 17" MacBook Pro will be available from May, priced at GBP1,999 inclusive of VAT, with build-to-order options such as 100GB 7200rpm hard drive, up to 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, Apple USB Modem available at additional cost.
