Worldwide Computer Products News-15 August 2006-BBC's Real Story claims UK bank account details sold in Nigeria(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The details of thousands of bank customers in the UK are being sold in Nigeria, according to the BBC's Real Story programme, to be broadcast on 14 August 2006.

The programme claims that fraudsters in Nigeria gain access to Internet banking data stored on PCs that have been recycled in the UK, often from council recycling points, and sent to Africa. It discovered second hand computers from all parts of the developed world in almost all PC markets in Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, and said identity fraud is a substantial problem in West Africa.

Consumer assistance business CPP Group claimed computer users should wipe their hard drive with a program before selling or giving their computer away, to ensure the drive's data is over-written, or remove the hard drive. It said if the drive is not wiped, it is easy for information to be located on a PC's hard disk and confirmed file deletion is not sufficient.

The UK government's regulatory office, the Information Commissioner's Office, confirmed that under the Data Protection Act, companies are legally obliged to remove personal information from computers once it is no longer required.
